Avoiding Expensive Problems IT professionals in America routinely waste thousands of hours attempting to diagnose network problems which are the result of improper cabling.  Simply untwisting a pair of wires an extra quarter inch during punch-down can lead to intermittent network problems which are very difficult to track down.  It is much easier to hire professional installers in the beginning than to tear down routers and re-code software in an attempt to solve problems which can ultimately be traced to improper wiring.  Companies who choose Ohio TeleCom avoid these headaches and expenses. Category 5 cable (Cat 5) is a twisted pair cable for carrying signals. This type of cable is used in structured cabling for computer networks such as Ethernet. The cable standard provides performance of up to 100 MHz and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), and 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet). Cat 5 is also used to carry other signals such as telephony and video. In some cases, multiple signals can be carried on a single cable; Cat 5 can carry two conventional telephone lines as well as a single 100BASE-TX channel in a single cable or two 100BASE-TX channels in a single cable. The cable is commonly connected using punch down blocks and modular connectors. Most Category 5 cables are unshielded, relying on the twisted pair design and differential signaling for noise rejection. Category 5 vs. 5e The category 5e specification improves upon the category 5 specification by tightening some crosstalk specifications and introducing new crosstalk specifications that were not present in the original category 5 specification. The bandwidth of category 5 and 5e is the same - 100 MHz. Category 6 cable, commonly referred to as Cat 6, is a standardized cable for Gigabit Ethernet and other network physical layers that is backward compatible with the Category 5/5e and Category 3 cable standards.[citation needed] Compared with Cat 5 and Cat 5e, Cat 6 features more stringent specifications for crosstalk and system noise.[citation needed] The cable standard provides performance of up to 250 MHz and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10- Gigabit Ethernet).[citation needed] Whereas Category 6 cable has a reduced maximum length when used for 10GBASE-T; Category 6a cable, or Augmented Category 6, is characterized to 500 MHz and has improved alien crosstalk characteristics, allowing 10GBASE-T to be run for the same distance as previous protocols.[citation needed] The heavier wire in some Cat 6 cables makes them too thick to attach to standard 8P8C connectors without a special modular piece, resulting in a technically out-of-compliance assembly.[citation needed] Because the conductor sizes are generally the same, Cat 6 jacks may also be used with Cat 5e cable.[citation needed] Category 6 cable can be identified by the printing on the side of the cable sheath.[1] Cat 6 patch cables are normally terminated in 8P8C modular connectors. If Cat 6 rated patch cables, jacks, and connectors are not used with Cat 6 wiring, overall performance is degraded to that of the cable or connector.[citation needed] Connectors use either T568A or T568B pin assignments; although performance is comparable provided both ends of a cable are the same, T568B is a deprecated standard in the US and no longer supported by TIA. The pin out for T568B should still be noted because when a crossover cable is used, one end is terminated T568B, and the other is T568A. Category 6 General Description: One description of Cat 6 would be as superior product intended for more demanding applications. Cat6 has a bandwidth 2.5 times greater than Cat5e, opening up many new technical possibilities. Cat6 could easily enable the development of lower-cost Gigabit Ethernet solutions, reducing the overall deployment cost of faster networking. The driving issue today is whether Cat 6 represents the best value for money and are there any anticipated stumbling blocks along the way. For some organizations, dire networking needs mean an almost immediate need to upgrade their networks. For a number of them, tomorrow’s spiraling networking requirements will soon demand more capacity than their existing cable can deliver, so to delay upgrading may stunt their future operations and threaten their competitiveness and bottom-line. It’s undoubtedly true that the cost of Cat6 is greater but so is its performance. There’s a price to be paid for a premium product certified to 250MHz and for guaranteed interoperability and backwards compatibility. Installation techniques for Cat6 cables and connections are significantly more demanding than for Cat5e too. The key reasons for these costs are because the new cable needs larger pathways, trunking, wider bend radii and far greater susceptibility to interference factors. The slightest deformation to cable shape will degrade signal performance too, resulting in a higher cost for flawless installation. What organizations need to bear in mind is to adopt a long-term view and that the cost of network cabling is an insignificant fraction of the total cost of ICT operations (around 2.5% in general) even though it has a direct bearing on their ability to do business - inadequacies in cable infrastructure accounting for 75% of all network downtime. Category 6a The latest standard from the TIA for enhanced performance standards for twisted pair cable systems was defined in February 2008 in ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B.2-10. Category 6a (or Augmented Category 6) is defined at frequencies up to 500 MHz—twice that of Cat. 6. Category 6a performs at improved specifications, in particular in the area of alien crosstalk as compared to Cat 6 UTP (unshielded twisted pair), which exhibited high alien noise in high frequencies. The global cabling standard ISO/IEC 11801 has been extended by the addition of amendment 2. This amendment defines new specifications for Cat. 6A components and Class EA permanent links. These new global Cat. 6A/Class EA specifications require a new generation of connecting hardware offering far superior performance compared to the existing products that are based on the American TIA standard.[2] The most important point is a performance difference between ISO/IEC and EIA/TIA component specifications for the NEXT transmission parameter. At a frequency of 500 MHz, an ISO/IEC Cat. 6A connector performs 3 dB better than a Cat. 6A connector that conforms with the EIA/TIA specification. 3 dB equals 50% reduction of near-end crosstalk noise signal power; see 3dB-point.[2] Confusion therefore arises because of the different naming conventions and performance benchmarks laid down by the International ISO/IEC and American TIA/EIA standards, which in turn are different from the regional European standard, EN 50173-1. In broad terms, the ISO standard for Cat6A is the highest, followed by the European standard and then the American(1 on 1 matching capability). Fiber Optics There are two basic types of fiber used today and many different types of Fiber Optic Cable. The two types of fiber are called SingleMode (SM) and MultiMode (MM), and SM fiber is more expensive but more efficient than MM fiber. SingleMode fiber is generally used where the distances to be covered are greater. Cables come in a variety of configurations determined by a variety of factors. Based on industry activity, it is evident that fiber-optics have become the industry standard for terrestrial transmission of telecommunication information. The choice is not whether to convert to optical fiber, but rather when to convert to optical fiber. The bandwidth needs of the Information Superhighway require a medium, like optical fiber, that can deliver large amounts of information at a fast speed. It will be difficult for copper cable to provide for future bandwidth needs. In recent years it has become apparent that fiber-optics are steadily replacing copper wire as an appropriate means of communication signal transmission. They span the long distances between local phone systems as well as providing the backbone for many network systems. Other system users include cable television services, university campuses, office buildings, industrial plants, and electric utility companies. A fiber-optic system is similar to the copper wire system that fiber-optics is replacing. The difference is that fiber-optics use light pulses to transmit information down fiber lines instead of using electronic pulses to transmit information down copper lines. Looking at the components in a fiber-optic chain will give a better understanding of how the system works in conjunction with wire based systems. The use of fiber-optics was generally not available until 1970 when Corning Glass Works was able to produce a fiber with a loss of 20 dB/km. It was recognized that optical fiber would be feasible for telecommunication transmission only if glass could be developed so pure that attenuation would be 20dB/km or less. That is, 1% of the light would remain after traveling 1 km. Today's optical fiber attenuation ranges from 0.5dB/km to 1000dB/km depending on the optical fiber used. Attenuation limits are based on intended application. There are several advantages that have been established with the development and implementation of fiber-optic cable systems. Compared to copper, optical fiber is relatively small in size and light in weight. This characteristic has made it desirable as intra-floor conduits and wiring duct space has become increasing plugged with expanded copper cable installation .Optical fiber is also desirable because of it's electromagnetic immunity. Since fiber-optics use light to transmit a signal, it is not subject to electromagnetic interference, radio frequency interference, or voltage surges. This may be an important consideration when laying cables near electronic hardware such as computers or industrial equipment. One of the initial economic factors to consider when converting to fiber- optics is the cost of replacing wire systems with fiber. Increased demand for optical fiber has brought the prices down within competitive range of copper. Cable sales are expected to increase. However, since transmitters, converters, optical repeaters, and a variety of connecting hardware will be needed, the initial cost of changing over to fiber can be expensive. Increased demand, advances in the technology, and competition has brought the prices down somewhat. Short term and long term gains should be considered when updating a communications system. In the short term it is often less expensive to continue using copper cabling for covering expanded communication needs. By simply adding more wire to an existing system, expanded needs can be covered. This avoids the expense of adding the transmitters and receivers needed for integrating optical fiber. Long term needs, however, may require more expansion in the future. Based on industry activity, it is evident that fiber-optics have become the industry standard for terrestrial transmission of telecommunication information. The choice is not whether to convert to optical fiber, but rather when to convert to optical fiber.
